Head to any social media site (namely Reddit), and if somebody brings up one of Steam’s competitors (e.g. Epic Store, or Xbox Store on PC), they’ll tell you that they’re terrible, and that you should use Steam. Interestingly, people loathed Steam when it was first released. So, why are so many people nowadays looking for a Steam account for sale?
They Eventually Had No Choice but to Use Steam
When Steam first launched, boxed PC games were still the norm. That’s now a thing of the past. Good luck finding a boxed game that doesn’t have a Steam key in it. Many companies have ditched discs. In some cases, they’re not even launching physical copies at all.
Most people ended up needing to be forced to use Steam on their PCs and, as it turns out, they loved it.
Their Libraries are Now on Steam
Owing to regular Steam sales and Humble Bundles, people have built up libraries of hundreds, if not thousands, of Steam games. They are very reluctant to move toward other PC apps, because that means they’ll essentially be casting aside the libraries that they’ve worked ever so hard to build up over the years.
Nowadays, when people buy games, they want to get them on Steam. They don’t want them to be anywhere else. It has even gotten to the point where people just flat-out refuse to buy games that they can’t find on Steam. Take Kingdom Hearts, for instance. It was on the Epic Store at a massively low price, and people still waited for the Steam launch.
There are a LOT of Games on Steam
Yes, you can complain about the content curation on Steam. We do. There’s a lot of terrible stuff there. However, there are also hundreds of thousands of good quality games too. If you want to buy a PC game, 99% of the time, you’ll probably find it on Steam.
…and the Games are Cheap
While they don’t offer massive sales like they used to, you can still pick up great games on Steam for a few dollars. Multiple times per year, Steam offers huge discount sales on most of the games on their platform, and they essentially become major events for gamers.
Steam Has Community Features
People love the community features on Steam. There’s no other platform that offers:
- Friends lists
- Community reviews
- Community guides
- Forums
- Achievements
- Ability to share your in-game creations (including mods)
There’s just so many ways to interact with other people. If you really want to be serious about your PC game playing, then you’d want Steam. It makes sense.
Steam Isn’t a Bad App
On top of all of this, Steam is a tremendous app. It works well. It is easy to use. There are no bugs, and games download nice and quickly. Once you’ve used Steam for a while, you’ll see why so many people tout it as the greatest app, although we do wish some of its competitors would get a look in too. Probably won’t, though. It is too easy to buy Steam gift card codes nowadays.
